The Soweto Theatre got somewhat of a “re-up” this past weekend as Arts Alive presented the Urban Clash Ziyamporoma event on Saturday Evening. The event lived up to its name- the event boasted a wide variety of music genres and each genre had its own representative. Taking part were cities such as Durban, uMthatha, Alexandra, Secunda, Pretoria, Vaal- even cities as far as Cape Town were represented.

The venue itself was transformed into an indoor and outdoor arena which was able to accommodate the turn out at the event. People came out in numbers to celebrate their Heritage Day at the event and not only did the crowd look beautiful dressed up in their different cultural attires, but it seemed only fitting that an event of this kind take place at such a lovely venue.

Most of the hundreds of people that showed up on the day were young people- but you could spot some of the older people having a good time as well- enjoying the great music and entertainment they had paid for. Upon arrival, patrons came across dozens of dancers- all clearly enjoying themselves and adding a carnival feel to the event. There were smiles all round and so much laughter in the air- this gave patrons a feel of comfort and made this event worth attending.

The MCs for the night were doing a great job of keeping the crowd entertained- not to mention how awesome the DJs were! A young and very talented DJ Sims representing Vaal, opened up the show with some some Hip Hop music, which the crowd enjoyed as they danced to some of the local Hip Hop songs he played. From that moment on the vibe got better and the crowd got bigger. The DJs were set to battle one another head to head to see which DJ has the better skills.

The famous “Twins on Deck” duo was representing house music and they really did bring the house down with their commercial house track selection and mixing skills. Another super talented performer was DJ Deeds who hailed from eGomora aka Alexandra, and he was able to capture the crowd with his Rap beats and song selection. One of the few female DJs for the night, DJ Teedo, had an explosive set with her infusion of reggae and Hip Hop. She wasn’t shy to mix up some old school Sean Paul and Bob Marley with some new school Hip Hop.

The highlight of the evening however, had to be the sensational performance by KZN’s rising star, Babes Wodumo. The first lady of West Ink along with her dance crew, set the stage alight with their energy and their presence. The crowd was singing along word for word to her hit single Wololo. Another artist who wowed the crowd was Zano who was representing eMbalenhle. His smooth and calming voice, backed up with some soulful up beat rhythms really did make for a wonderful performance.
