The Liberty Radio Awards have once again come to an end with the acknowledgement of the talent and innovation in the radio broadcasting space. The Liberty Radio Awards Gala Banquet took place this past Saturday at the Sandton Convention Centre, where Kaya FM and Hot 91.9 FM took top honours.

In this year’s Liberty Radio Awards “Home Of The Afropolitan,” Kaya FM was crowned the Commercial Station of the Year. The Gauteng based radio station won this category for the second time since the awards inception. Kaya FM’s Sandile Van Heerden also clinched the award for Best Sports Presenter, while Tunicia Phillips took Best Field News Reporter making it 3 awards for Kaya FM.

Xhosa radio station, Umhlobo Wenene FM won the Public Broadcast Station (PBS) Of The Year category. Mpumelelo Mali took Best PBS Content Producer, SJL (Sijik’ ilanga) took the Best PBS Drive Time Show Award. They then took highly contested Best PBS Music Show category with “Ikwayala Eziphambili,” with their imaging department wining that category and “Ibuzwa Kwabaphambili” wrapping up the Umhlobo Wenene FM collection with taking the Best PBS Weekend Show Award.

Campus Radio was championed by the University of Stellenbosch’ MFM, which was crowned Campus Station of the Year. MFM also then took the award for the Best Campus Breakfast Show category.

Hot 91.9FM stole the show, scooping a total of 10 awards including Best Community Radio Station. “Jo’burg’s Best Old Skool and R&B Station” was the recipient of awards in the following community radio categories:

Best Afternoon Drive Presenter: Simon Parkinson
Best Breakfast Presenter: Darren Scott
Jo’burg’s Hottest Breakfast Show: Best Breakfast Show
Community Project: A House in 67 minutes in honour of Madiba
Best Content Producer: John Walland
The Best Music in the World Ever: Hot 91.9FM
News Presenter: Gladys Sithole
Sports Show: Jo’burg PM with David O’ Sullivan
Station Imaging: Hot 919.FM
Station of the Year: Hot 919.FM
