Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned 2016 CAF Champions League title winners. The Brazilians under the leadership of Pitso “Jingles” Mosimane have cemented their place at helm of African football. They did so by claiming a 3-1 victory over Zamalek in the two legged final last night.
Five time CAF Champions League winners, Zamalek put up a brave fight, however the 3-0 deficit they had proved too for them to overturn. Zamalek scrambled a 1-0 lead in the second half on Sunday night, but could not break down Masandawana’s resolute defence.
Mamelodi Sundowns has become the second team in Southern Africa to walk away with the title, after their rivals Orlando Pirates clinched it in 1995. A 3-0 lead heading into the second leg proved vital as all Sundowns had to do was preserve their lead while Zamalek had to chase the game and score three goals to at least level matters.
The ABSA Premiership champions will now represent Africa when they play against the champions of Europe, Asia & South America in the FIFA Club World Cup in Tokyo in December.
Downs coach Pitso Mosimane said there would always be opportunities for his team to win cup competitions such as the MTN 8, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup, but the opportunity to be crowned the best club on the African continent doesn’t come often. Chairman of the club was also unable to hide how delighted he was as he joined his team in celebrating on the pitch at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt.
