If you’re looking for some place trendy and fun to spend your Sunday afternoon then you should definitely be looking at the CookOut Sunday in Soweto. This monthly event has quickly become one of the most popular places for people to spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon enjoying good food, good music and good vibes.
The hosts of the CookOut Sunday describe it as “A gathering of culinary stalls where each vendor comes to showcase different cuisines.” So, along with being a great place to relax and blow off steam in preparation for the coming week, the CookOut Sunday is also a food enthusiast’s dream. The best thing about this event is that it’s neither like other food markets that we have seen. It is not situated in the Central Business District nor in the areas which are commonly known as the trendy areas of Johannesburg, but in one of Gauteng’s most famous townships, Soweto.
The location of this event is great because it is something that is very rarely seen in townships. The introduction of culinary delights that township dwellers usually feel they have to travel to the suburbs to enjoy is a great idea to fill a gap in the market. Now people who live in the township don’t have to travel that far to gain access to the kind of food that is not easily accessible in the township. The fact that this initiative was taken by the owners of Soweto’s very own gourmet pizza place just adds to the allure of the event.
The minds behind this concept say that their aim in creating this event was to expose the people to a different culinary experience to what is usually offered in Soweto. They also say they want to cultivate and encourage a more “vibrant lifestyle around the culinary industry” and to give up and coming chefs, restauranteurs and mixologists a stage on which they can showcase their talents and passion for food.
Another exciting thing about this event is that it is held in different venues all over Soweto. This also encourages the exploration of the township and for those attendees who do not live there, they get the chance to see and experience the different parts of the township. The layout of the event is very family friendly with a designated children’s play area situated separately from the Beer Garden and the food stalls so as to give the little ones a safe space to enjoy themselves as well.
The next CookOut Sunday is on the 29th of January 2017 at the Meadowlands Hall outdoor area in Zone 3, Soweto.
