The final match of the Currie-Cup competition between the Toyota Free State Cheetahs and the Vodacom Blue Bulls hit Bloemfontein stadium like a storm on Saturday, 22 October 2016. The Free State Cheetahs succeeded in maintaining their unbeaten record when they secured a fifth Currie Cup title on Saturday.

As always the pavilion was filled with supporters from both teams and an atmosphere of excitement filled the air like only a true South African Currie Cup fever could. From adults completely body-painted in orange with cheetahs painted on their faces, to children with flags, and ladies wearing their charming orange jerseys. Also among the fans were an older couple who told some of the supporters that they were so privileged to attend Currie Cup finals at this specific stadium in the years 1976, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2016.

One thing about a rugby match to always be remembered is the proudly South African food and snacks served. Think about boerewors rolls, biltong and slap chips. Maybe not always so healthy, but very delicious!

The match was a very intense game, with the Cheetahs giving the Bulls a good run for their money! Although the Bulls did show some excellent defence at some times, they could not secure what is most important, a lead on the scoreboard.

With the support of the roaring crowd the Free States Cheetahs managed to beat the Bulls with 36 to 16 points. The win was well-deserved after a great season for the Cheetahs. The Blue Bulls congratulated the rival team with their win, on their official Blue Bulls Facebook page : Bulls Official

“Congratulations to the Toyota Free State Cheetahs on becoming Currie Cup Champions 2016… Thank you to their team, management and fans for a greating sporting nature. A massive thank you to the #BullsFamily for standing by us and believing in us.”

If you were not lucky enough to attend or watch the final you may take a look at some pictures of the game on the official Cheetah Facebook page Cheetahs Rugby. Many fans have already congratulated the team on Facebook. For now you can keep your eyes locked on Ticketstroom as we cover sporting events all over the country.
